Supporting Those Living With Dementia in Our Community

Updated: Feb 14

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. It’s a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind individuals and families affected by dementia that they are not alone. This year, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is highlighting stories of people living with dementia. Many have found meaning, connection, and joy after their diagnosis—often by reaching out for support.

At Success Home Care,

we share this message wholeheartedly. Dementia impacts not only the individual but also families, caregivers, and loved ones. With the right support, education, and compassionate care, people living with dementia can continue to live meaningful lives at home.

Understanding Dementia and Its Impact

Dementia is not just a single disease. It’s an umbrella term for a range of cognitive impairments that affect memory, thinking, and social abilities. This can make daily tasks challenging. Understanding dementia is the first step in providing effective support.

The Emotional Toll of a Diagnosis

Receiving a dementia diagnosis can feel overwhelming. It can also be isolating for both the individual and their family. Many families are unsure where to turn, what to expect next, or how to balance caregiving with work, family, and personal well-being.

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. plays a vital role in ensuring individuals and caregivers have access to:

  • Education and disease-specific information

  • Emotional support and guidance

  • Community and peer connections

  • Practical resources through the First Link® Dementia Helpline

These services help people feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout their journey.

Navigating a Dementia Diagnosis Can Feel Overwhelming

As we mentioned earlier, the journey through dementia can be daunting. It’s important to know that you are not alone. Many families face similar challenges.

Finding Your Support Network

Building a support network is crucial. Connecting with others who understand what you’re going through can provide comfort and guidance. Local organizations, support groups, and online communities can be invaluable resources.

How Success Home Care Supports People Living With Dementia

At Success Home Care, we provide personalized, dementia-informed home care services across Victoria, Sidney, Saanich, and the Westshore. Our goal is to support individuals in remaining safe, comfortable, and engaged in their own homes while easing the caregiving load for families.

We can help by:

  • Providing consistent, familiar caregivers

  • Supporting daily routines and personal care

  • Offering meaningful companionship and social engagement

  • Assisting with mobility, meals, and light household tasks

  • Monitoring changes and communicating with families

Most importantly, we help families get their time back. Time to rest, focus on work, spend quality moments together, or simply take a break, knowing their loved one is cared for with dignity and respect.

Giving Families Back Time and Peace of Mind

Caregiving is often an act of love, but it can also be physically and emotionally exhausting. Home care support allows families to step out of constant caregiving mode. They can return to their role as a son, daughter, spouse, or friend, rather than doing it all alone.

By working alongside community resources like the Alzheimer Society of B.C., we help families build a strong support network. This way, no one has to navigate dementia by themselves.
