Embrace Active Aging: Staying Connected, Independent & Vibrant on Vancouver Island
Active Aging Week | October 5–11, 2026
October is a wonderful time to celebrate what healthy, active aging can look like.

During Active Aging Week, October 5–11, 2026, communities are encouraged to recognize the many ways older adults continue to participate, contribute, connect and thrive.
At Success Home Care, we believe staying active isn't about how far you can walk or how much you can do. It's about continuing to enjoy the people, places and activities that bring meaning to your life.
Serving Victoria, Sidney, Saanich, the Westshore and surrounding communities, our caregivers and companions help older adults remain independent, engaged and connected to the communities they call home.
Active Aging Looks Different for Everyone
For one person, staying active might mean a walk along the Sidney waterfront. For someone else, it might be meeting a friend for coffee, attending an exercise class, browsing the shops, visiting a community centre or simply getting out of the house for a change of scenery.
Physical activity is only one part of active aging. Social connection, independence, purpose and participation matter too.
Sometimes, however, getting out isn't as easy as it once was. Driving may no longer be comfortable. Mobility may have changed. A spouse or friend who once joined in outings may no longer be available. And sometimes having another person along simply makes an activity feel safer and more enjoyable.
That's where companion care can make a meaningful difference.
More Than Help at Home
Success Home Care's companion services aren't limited to activities inside the home. Our caregivers can help older adults continue doing the things they enjoy in their own communities.
Depending on individual needs, companion care can include:
Personalized outings and activities based on interests, mobility, comfort and energy level.
Transportation and accompaniment to appointments, shopping, community programs, social activities and outings.
Walking and activity companionship for those who feel more confident having someone alongside them.
Social connection and conversation that can make an ordinary afternoon something to look forward to.
Support with errands and everyday activities so clients can continue participating in their community while maintaining as much independence as possible.
Four Ways to Enjoy an Active Autumn in Greater Victoria
1. Enjoy the Sidney Waterfront
A stroll along Sidney's waterfront can be as leisurely as needed. Enjoy the ocean views, watch the boats, sit on a bench or finish the outing with coffee or tea at a local café.
The goal doesn't have to be exercise. Sometimes the greatest benefit is simply getting outside and enjoying the day with someone.
2. Explore Saanich
Saanich offers many opportunities for older adults with different interests and activity levels—from parks and nature areas to recreation and community programs.
An afternoon could include a gentle walk, a recreation program, swimming, a community activity or simply an outing to a favourite neighbourhood spot.
3. Spend an Afternoon in the Westshore
For clients in Langford, Colwood, View Royal and surrounding areas, an outing might mean enjoying the waterfront, birdwatching, visiting a park, doing some shopping or stopping somewhere for lunch.
Our companions can help make these outings more accessible for individuals who may no longer drive or who feel more comfortable going out with support.
4. Stay Social
Active aging isn't only about physical activity.
Card games, crafts, community groups, lunches, workshops, music, hobbies and simply spending time with other people can all be part of staying engaged.
Greater Victoria has many community and seniors' organizations offering opportunities to meet people, learn something new and stay connected. A Success Home Care companion can provide transportation and accompaniment so getting there doesn't have to be the barrier.
Independence Doesn't Mean Doing Everything Alone
One of the most important parts of aging well is being able to continue making choices about how you want to live your life.
Accepting a little support doesn't mean giving up independence. Sometimes, the right support makes greater independence possible.
A companion can be the person who makes it possible to keep attending a favourite class, go grocery shopping, enjoy a waterfront walk, meet a friend for lunch or simply get out of the house for an afternoon.
At Success Home Care, our goal is to provide the right amount of support while respecting each client's routines, preferences, abilities and independence.
