Honouring National Indigenous Peoples Day: June 21, 2025

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day—a time to honour the history, traditions, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada. Celebrated on the summer solstice—the longest day of the year—this day holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for Indigenous communities from coast to coast.

Originally proclaimed in 1996 by Governor General Roméo LeBlanc, National Indigenous Peoples Day was born from decades of advocacy by Indigenous leaders and organizations. It offers all Canadians the opportunity to learn about and reflect on Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural practices, and the ongoing legacy of resilience in the face of colonialism.

At Success Home Care, we are committed to fostering respect, inclusion, and cultural safety for Indigenous seniors and clients in our care. We actively encourage our team and broader community to participate in local events, educational initiatives, and cultural activities that honour Indigenous teachings and traditions.

Whether through storytelling, art, music, language, or traditional foods, these moments of cultural connection offer powerful reminders of our shared humanity. They also help strengthen our collective efforts toward truth, reconciliation, and understanding.

This June 21—and throughout National Indigenous History Month—we invite everyone to listen, to learn, and to stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities. Together, we can honour the past, celebrate the present, and support a more respectful and inclusive future.

To further honour National Indigenous Peoples Day, we invite you to watch a powerful and reflective video featuring Sulksun (Shane Pointe), a respected Coast Salish Knowledge Keeper. In this extended conversation, Sulksun shares teachings grounded in Indigenous worldview, culture, and history—offering profound insights into truth-telling, humility, respect, and our relationship to the land and one another. This recording is more than a lesson; it is a generous offering of wisdom and lived experience that encourages deep listening and reflection. We encourage you to take the time to watch and sit with these teachings, and to consider how they can guide your actions both personally and within your community.

As we honour the stories, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, we must also ask ourselves what it means to be in right relationship with Indigenous communities. Whether it's attending local events, engaging with Indigenous-led organizations, or simply taking the time to listen to Knowledge Keepers like Sulksun, every action rooted in respect and learning makes a difference. We encourage you to reflect on what you’ve learned today and consider how you can continue supporting truth, reconciliation, and cultural safety in your everyday life.

Let this not be the end of a conversation—but the beginning of a deeper commitment.
